Sales Cover Letter Example (Quota, Pipeline, and Why This Product)

Sales managers want the quota number in the first three lines. Then they want to know you can build pipeline yourself and that you will not churn out in six months. Write the letter like a first call: short, direct, ends with an ask.

Fictional applicant Marcus Bell applying for Account Executive, Mid-Market at Northwind Software.

Dear Ms. Grant,

I am applying for the Mid-Market Account Executive role at Northwind Software. I closed 118% of a $780K annual quota last year selling scheduling software to clinics with 20 to 200 staff, and 64% of that pipeline came from outbound I built myself.

What works for me is a small number of specific conversations rather than volume for its own sake. I keep a list of forty target accounts, learn how each one currently handles the problem, and open with something true about their situation. My average cycle was 41 days against a team average of 58, mostly because I qualify hard early and walk away from deals that will not close.

I have run full-cycle deals from cold email through security review and procurement, worked in Salesforce and Outreach, and handed off clean to customer success; my first-year churn on closed accounts was 6%.

I want to sell Northwind because I have watched two of my clinic customers replace their inventory process with it and stop complaining about it. That is rare, and it is easier to sell something people keep. I would welcome fifteen minutes to walk you through my last two quarters.

Best regards,
Marcus Bell

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the [job title] position at [company]. [One sentence: the single fact about you that best matches the posting, with a number.]

[Proof paragraph 1: one story from your resume, what you did, the result, mapped to something the posting asks for.]

[Proof paragraph 2: a second story, ideally a different skill: a process you built, people you trained, a system you know.]

[One sentence about the company that shows you read the posting or know the product.] [One sentence connecting that to what you would do.]

Thank you for your time. [A plain ask: a call, a sample, fifteen minutes.]

Sincerely,
